Current Available Inventory

Here's an inventory update -- the statistics are from Virginia MLS. It's a little quirky -- I read it from right to left. It begins in March 2005 and ends on February 1, 2011. February 9ths inventory stands at 6,345, a slight decrease from the beginning of the month.

Here's the link to the whole spreadsheet.

Harriet-

Thanks for posting the charts. It looks like inventories continue to stabilize at a fairly reasonable level. I guess this part of the reason why prices for the last 1-2 years have moved more slowly (up and down) than the previous 5-8 years

hb,

If you go over to the right of Harriet's site and click on to the NoVa Inventory site, you will see some great charts and graphs. I find examining the trends very informative.

I like those charts too. Although I usually forget about them until Harriet posts inventory numbers and I remember to look at them :)

HB - you're welcome. It's been a while since I've published those, mostly because inventory hasn't done anything exciting lately.

It will be interesting to see what happens now that the weather's changing and we're finally into more hospitable weather for house-hunting. I have a feeling that we're not going to be flooded with inventory, but I could be wrong.

Last year there seemed as though there was just enough, but not a buyer's or renter's paradise.

It seems like the system is gummed up.
Cheap rates were letting people on I/Os and ARMs hang on, and letting the banks arbitrage treasuries ( A greater crime I have never seen).

I'm just trying to get goood data on vacant dwelling units around here.
Does anyone know how to drill into the 2010 census?
