a while back somebody posted a web page which lets you view public records, including loans, for free, and without having to sign up for anything. i used it extensively at one point.

but then i lost that bookmark and could never find it again...

Due to the occasional interest here in mortgage instruments, I'd like to recommend a recent National Public Radio article on the Life and Death of Toxie. Tragedy or Farce, it depends on your point of view. Click on the accompanying awesome video narration.

For those of you not familiar with Toxie

"Planet Money is committed to following the financial crisis to the bitter end. And what better way to do that than to own a piece of it. We bought one of those things that no one wanted, one of those things that almost brought down the global economy: our very own toxic asset. This one had more than 2,000 mortgages in it. After months of foreclosures, home sales and loan modifications our toxic asset died in September 2010. We paid $1,000 of our own money for our piece of it and ended up losing over half. Click on the timeline and roll over the states to watch the disaster unfold."

Hmm, contrarian, using your link (thanks), I entered addresses of people I know have mortgages but I kept getting a reply that the site had no info. Is there a trick I haven't figured out?

I think this is only for mers, so if the loan never got securitized then it's not on there.

Thanks, pat.
