Northern Virginia Bits Bucket 5/14/2010

PM edition . . .

Just wow: "Detroit Shrinks Itself, Historic Homes and All."

Maybe Detroit has a future as a rural farming community.

Please post your local house search updates, MLS finds, on-topic ideas, and links here.

Harriet-

Thanks for the article. Its really sad seeing them destroy historical houses, but getting rid of all the excess inventory where crime rates are higher is probably essential to try and fix their city

I read this article earlier in the day.

I believe it mentioned that one of the houses subject to demolition with federal, now city, funds was Mitt Romney's boyhood home.

Now, it may have been sold, etc., and it's a new owner that's left it to rot. But I would figure he has a responsibility to look into that.

This is not housing related...

The proposed budget cuts in CA are pretty incredible. Schwarzenegger is recommending getting rid of most child care, home care for elderly, and welfare programs. Ouch, it is nice living in a state that has pretty good finances.

If you ask me the government shouldn't have been paying for those things in the first place.

hb,

His position is that the judiciary shot down most of the passed cuts last year that were more selective inside those programs--so now the whole program is going. Baby with the bathwater style.

Though, I tend to agree with Jeremy, those aren't generally the most beneficial government functions. But I can't complain about constitutionality...

What responsibility do YOU have to a house that you lived in over 50 years ago, in a state you haven't lived in for 40 years?

Perhaps I'm missing the point of your comment, but it just seems ludicrously silly as it's written?

k,

He's an extremely rich Republican politician. His responsibility is to avoid anything that could be trumped up into a scandal by a media hungry to attack him or his policies. Further, most people feel some emotional ties to those kinds of places and if notified would want to do something. So that he doesn't (apparently) speaks poorly for his character. Or at least an argument to that effect (fairly convincing IMO) could be made.

You think that is a "fairly convincing" argument?

Romney should somehow be responsible for a home he hasn't had any connection to in decades?

What should he do? Buy it and maintain it so that it can stand proudly on a street where all the other houses have been bulldozed?

None of that makes a bit of sense on any level.

"Walk to metro"? Looks like a pretty long hike to me.

Nash St.

Ace: No way you can walk to metro from that house on Nash St. It is near our house and it would be a big hike up and down the steep hill on 23rd St. That house sold in Dec. According to neighborhood rumor, a general bought it and did not get the big job he expected at the Pentagon and is now selling it quickly.

Hi, Waiting Too, thanks for the info. Are you enjoying your house and the neighborhood?
