Blog reader John pointed out this AOL article: Companies That Will Disappear in 2009. There's only one big builder on the list, K. Hovnanian. (Toll Brothers continues to survive: F4Q08 Conference Call).
Other homebuilder stocks (TOL, DHI, RYL, NVR) have made significant bounces off their lows in November, but HOV isn't looking very healthy at the moment. The full list of AOL's suggested company failures:
Chrysler
Sirius XM
AIG
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
Rite-Aid
The New York Times
Nortel
Pier 1 Imports
Charter Communications

I'd add AOL to the list....
AOL still exists?
FYI....

Check out #10 on the list....
2008 median house price: $343,160
2009 projected change: -19.9%
2010 projected change: -5.7%
This market, which includes bordering Virginia towns Arlington and Alexandria, is cooling off from record highs. Forecasts call for median prices to slide 20% to $275,000 in 2009.
Goldie, thanks for the link. Not actively looking yet - just sniffing hopefully, waiting for the 2012 events - so highlighting which areas are included is helpful. For ..umm.. lazy people such as myself, that is. Not including ANYBODY else in that number, mind you.
Also why I get a lot of enjoyment out of Tabitha's posts. Manassas and environs are not where I'd ordinarily be looking, being somewhat challenged in the commuting skills arena (see paragraph 1 above). But she makes it sound like there are neat areas to come home to.
The DC area was rotten with goofy mortgages,
this will lead to an inevitable implosion.
unimproved 1R2 houses in Bethesda were
going for 700/SF, that was bound to fail
Didn't Sirius already merge with the other satellite radio company?
