I love the American attitude -- we always look for creative ways to survive and prosper during difficult circumstances, economic or otherwise.
Consider:
$6,500 for a four-day "Inaugural Rental" in Warrenton.
And then this:
"The sheer number of entrepreneurial tricksters that abound on Craiglist hoping to rip off inaugural visitors is shameful.Lance, is that you? :-)
If you've clicked on my ad among the throngs of other ridiculous listings and are in need of a place to stay that TRULY allows you to view the events without being stuck in traffic and/or forces you to shack up in a potentially life threatening neighborhood, you should contact me.
My 2 bedroom apartment is safe, comfortable and 1 block to the Capitol. It's on New Jersey And D SE. I have parking, room to sleep 6 comfortably, high speed internet and cable and plenty of historic character - something you won't find in a gawdy mcmansion in Annandale, Virginia, Darnestown, Maryland or Culpeper, VA (or some other such nonsense rental in a provincial, irrelevent cookie cutter community), the difference with my place is that you'll actually experience the inauguration in person rather than watch it on a big screen at an Appleby's on Route 211 in Warrenton, Virginia.
$1,000 a night or best offer (Jan 17-22 dates negotiable) - email for details and pictures."

I would do that too, if I could only move out of my mother's basement!
A guy I know in DC (Tenleytown) is doing this. Apparently he goes out of town for every inagural & gets someone to rent his place to pay for his vacation!
BTW, Did you notice that the Warrenton McMansion owner's listing said his place is:
"Just 30 min. outside of Washington, D.C."
WTF!!!!! There is no conceivable world in which Warrenton is 30 minutes outside of DC. If some guy rents this place thinking he's a 1/2 hour from the action, hes gonna be sorely disappointed!
Is it just me, or does anyone else wonder why the advertiser thinks prospective renters would care so much about his/her apparently ever-so-fabulous details? I would think most people coming for the inaugural are far more interested in the inaugural and just want a safe, clean, pleasant, convenient and reasonably priced place to stay. No need for this doofus to insult people who live in Warrenton or anywhere else.
oops - meant to say "his/her home's apparently..."
I live in Warrenton and love it here. And I know exactly the location described of that house for rent. It is NOT 1/2 hour from DC. In no traffic, it is a solid 50-55 minutes.
Now about the jerk with the comment about the Warrenton Applebee's--(I hate that restaurant), he obviously knows nothing about Warrenton except the commercial area-such as the VERY wealthy (multi-billionaires) and NOTABLE and FAMOUS people that live in this area whose names I will not mention to protect their privacy.
Yup, sure wished I lived on Capitol Hill, petrified of getting mugged or killed walking down the street. Yeah, New Jersey and D Streets in SOUTHEAST D.C.--a safe place my a**!!!!!!!
It really is funny watching/reading the neighborhood bashing...
Of all the fruitcake things KH and Lance you to say their various commentaries on how amazing and great their neighborhoods are were some of the most amusing.
bay400,
Well, in a pinch, we pick Applebee's in Warrenton from time to time. It's not as badly priced as some other places, and the service has been mediocre but acceptable. Of course there is a tremendous selection of eating out places in Old Town Warrenton so it's not a choice for going out with grownups, just if one includes the young in the mix. But with tots in tow, Country Cookin' works best becaue they have appealing vegetables for kids.
I wonder why it's all about food in these neighborhood-critical essays. Kind of a weird obsession.
There's a new Wegman's near Warrenton, which is sucking business out of Safeway, Giant, Food Lion, Wal-Mart, and the new Harris Teeter in Warrenton (which isn't even built yet, but they need it -- why?) I wonder if all of these grocery stores are sustainable. Wegman's, I noticed, has cheaper prices on milk and canned vegetables than Wal-Mart and certainly has a bountiful selection of everything fresh as well.
Just like the Craigslist poster shouldn't bash all of Warrenton, bay400 shouldn't bash all of Southeast Washington DC. I'm sure that neither person has truly spent an evening in the area they choose to slap around.
