Contemporary fans,

Here's a beauty I found when searching for contemporaries, just for fun--outside my price range (!) and my preferred neighborhoods and lacks some amenities (e.g., garage, back yard?) but I love this house.

oops, here's the link:

Ace, that is indeed a fabulous house. If I owned it, I would tone down the stark whiteness inside with a some selected soft primary colors -- but it's exactly the kind of house I'd like to own someday. Great find!

Ace, that is a fabulous house. For those of us crazy enough to love contemporaries in a center hall colonial world: would anybody consider simply pooling funds and doing a co-housing thing, is how much I love this house. Thanks for posting it!

ace,

That is gorgeous!!! Wow, how much did they have to pay the window washers to make those pictures look that fabulous!!! I love the extremely subtle kitchen. Not sure I'd want to live in it, but I love it!

Zapoteca, great idea! If there were a few more bedrooms & baths, we could all use it at the same time.

I'm happy other people love houses like this here. As you say, it is a center hall colonial world (and faux prior styles in new houses). It's a joy to find something creative and modern, but aside from the expense, most of us don't have the 3 years and lots of patience to deal with design and construction hassles. If only these obstacles weren't so high, I have to believe we would see more modern houses in the area...

I went to the architect's website--he said this particular house was on a "busy corner", which apparently influenced the orientation of the house toward the atrium, and the placement of the windows. I'm sure the busy corner is a turnoff for many people.

Cara,

I owned a house somewhat like this in a MUCH less expensive part of the country years ago. It actually cost less to have the windows cleaned than with traditional houses because the window washers didn't have to deal with all the divided panes. A couple of sweeps with a squeegee and you're done.

I lived in that area of Bethesda until 2006. That road isn't terribly busy as far as I know - it's a neighborhood road. Wilson Rd a block away is somewhat busy but it's only two lanes and the area is completely residential. Personally I wouldn't find that location to be unacceptably busy.

The school in the satellite photo is Landon, a swanky boy's school.

i was chatting up with some lady at a thanksgiving party and she said she lives in a very unique neighborhood of contemporary houses somewhere in Alexadria south(?) of Del Ray. But i couldn't remember the name of the neighborhood/development. anyone?

MM, Is Hollin Hills there?

Thanks, Jeff B.

MM,

There are contemporary homes in Hollin Hills (in Fairfax County, about 5 miles south of Del Ray), and in the west end of Alexandria City, along Taney Ave.

Do you think this sweet home in Alexandria is worth over a million dollars?

Many thanks for your advice.

a quick search of that zip http://www.franklymls.com/default.aspx?m=R&h=ALL&s=22302

(under the faulty assumption that the zip=del ray) yields one similar but much bigger home at the same price:

http://www.franklymls.com/AX6830459

and a couple of distressed sales of slightly less cool, but otherwise similar houses for under $800k

And one quote un-quote contemporary home for ACE:
http://www.franklymls.com/AX6821770

(it could be much cooler, but it has some elements in an interesting direction, and its neighbors might be better)

econoclass,

Oh yes, so my conclusion is. No. It's very pretty, and I can see how one could fall in love with it, I'm a sucker for stone-work, and glassed in rooms myself, but, no I think it's worth closer to $850k now, and potentially less at the bottom.

if you want a charming gem to fall in love with for *half* the price here you go.

(I know, it's not the same neighborhood, but it's still Alexandria)
