Here's another one to watch out for -- a Nigerian scam directed at renters. Jim Klinge has the info over at bubbleinfo.com.
The perpetrators take a listing off of the MLS and post it on Craigslist for a super low rental price, hoping to get a credit application filled in with vital information they can use (identity theft).
There's definitely a place for professional property managers like Austin Realty out in the Piedmont. It's helpful to have a go-between who looks out for both tenants and landlords, especially if either party is inexperienced.

Another Rental Scam

My home was a victim of this on craigslist. My home was listed for sale on the MLS and one Saturday I had 4 people show up at my home regarding my "rental".
The story was is that the "owner" of the home was on a mission in Africa. The "owner" couldn't sell the home and needed to rent it out immediately. Two of the people had filled out applications (eek, stolen identity!) but none had wired the rent money to Africa (yet).
They had a local phone number to talk with a rental agent too! Funny, the craigslist ad immediately disappeared after one of the visitors called him back to ask what the deal was.
Yeah craigslist is full of scammers. I bought a TV off craigslist and for every 3 people I contacted, 2 were scammers.
To be honest, the site is full of bottomfeeders and sellers who are unmotivated. It took me a month to get a TV at a fair price because most people made it so difficult to do business with them ( i.e. had no time to show it to you, stopped responding to emails, refused to sell it for the prices that others listed theirs at ). I did get a really decent projection LCD HDTV for 400$ though.
The Nigerians are sure fearless when it comes to new ways to scam people. Thanks for the heads up.
J... How surprised were you when people starting showing up for the rental? I don't know how I would have handled it.
A**** R**** is nothing but a bunch of thieves and thugs. They have a corner on the market in the Fauquier area. There is hardly a place that is for rent that isn't from them.
If you are a landowner or a renter, please, please, please think twice before renting from them or letting your property be managed by them. Rent from them as a last resort. They don't take the owners wishes into consideration at all.
If anyone wants details, I will gladly spill them. In all my years of renting, they are the WORST landlords, and are nothing but crooks.
I'm actually suing them in court over an issue. They are trash.
harriet,
I just sent you an e-mail, it's a little long, but it explains my story.
When my fiancĂ© and I were looking to rent a place, we looked at one in Falls Church via the realtor, not the owner. We then filled out a rental application via the realtor who submitted it to the property management company, who then took forever to get back to us. Finally sent us the lease, which we had to have notarized plus a bunch of other hoops. We sent it back asap (now 5 days pre move-in) and they called and said rent would be $600 per year higher or no go. I scampered around like a maniac to find another rental – from an OWNER this time. Sorry, I don’t do business with scumbags who try to get people’s back against the wall and then raise the rent. For what it is worth, current place found on craigslist, scumbag place found on Long & Foster website. Avoid “Professional” Property Management of Annandale! (Read some atrocious reviews of PPM afterword.)
Yeah I got one of these emails. I asked them "Can I send you a check please," but they never replied.
Another trick is for a person facing foreclosure to rent out their place and ask for 2 months rent. Then a week later it forecloses and the renter gets kicked out and the money is lost.
Hey Doug
Don't take it out on Craigslist. I live in California and it is one of the best sources for rentals. I am sure that scammers have tried to flood the paper with scams because it is free. They have a Please turn these people in policy now and I have not ran into any scams there yet. However; a site called "thatrentalsite" is full of them (so many that the site might be part of the scam!!!). Every single contact from this site has been a scam!
Good luck
